The Statues of the 47 Ronin of Ako

Stone statues of the 47 Ronin which took 20 years to build stand in front of a rock cavern.

The stone statues of the 47 Ronin along a rock wall in a cave which seems ideal as a training ground for Buddhist monks were built over a period of 20 years by one man as a memorial tribute.

Gensuke, the manservant of Gengoemon Kataoka, one of the 47 Ronin of Ako who have been greatly celebrated in the fictionalized “Chushingura” through kabuki performances and joruri narrative music, memorialized the 47 warriors by building statues in their honor over a period of 20 years along a giant rock wall. These statues located by this wall deep in the mountains are enveloped in a shroud of mystery.
