Haruta Gofukuten (Haruta Kimono Fabric Shop)

A venerable shop which opened over 100 years ago, it is here where you can change into the traditional work wear of Japanese women.

This is a long-established fabric store which was founded over a century ago. The service to be fitted into a hakama at a reasonable price is very popular, and customers can even try walking through the town in the hakama.

A great number of women worked at Tomioka Silk Mill which has become the symbol of Japan’s industrial modernization. These women, known as koujo, wore hakama at work which can now be rented at Haruta Gofukuten. These hakama which are somewhat different from kimono are fun to stroll about in while walking the streets of retro Tomioka.
